Tornado near New Ulm, MN

August 24, 2006 - (C) 2006 David Drufke

A tornado outbreak was predicted for Minnesota this day. I chose St. Peter and just west of New Ulm as the places to spend the day. It was weird to see the peaceful city where I spent most of the day in chaos on my way home. I headed east to get near one of three towers rapidly growing in the area, where I ran across regualar chase partner Bill Doms in New Ulm.

My targeted area was right on (based on SPC mesoanalysis sig tor, eroded CIN, and visible Cu/tower growth). A storm developed 5 miles east of me and rapidly developed this tornado 100 yards to our south. This tornado moved to a safer distance of serveral hundred yards away when touchdown and began kicking up dust. Separating from Bill to shoot the sunlit side of this tornado also cost me a good view of the second, and much larger tornado of the day. For video of the first tornado, click here.
